Primarily it’s the situation’s vulnerability to humidity, water (or sea water) and different temperatures that will define its patina. It functions in a way that when the surface of the bronze components have developed this coating the procedure will finish and the metal underneath won’t suffer from further oxidization. So that you do not have to be terrified of the watch but surely rotting off as time passes. This attribute of bronze provides an awesome, truly unique look to the watch and, truth be told, many collectors love the concept of having a piece in their collection that is ready to transform into a one-of-kind piece that absolutely nobody else has.So what is the problem? Finally, it is rather tough to earn bronze cases and not many (if any) manufacturers are capable of producing these instances in bigger runs. This is where Gianluca Gervasi’s Florentine workshop comes into the picture.
His moderately sized workshop is determined by the outskirts of Florence – and a workshop it is in the truest sense of the word. No fancy entrance or reception, only a large gate with a humble tablet that says: “Meccanica di Precisione, Gervasi & C”. Gianluca – seen on one of the pictures above – is that very typical kind of master craftsman who will only go on endlessly about the innumerable details of the trade. Although careful to not share any well-kept secrets, his enthusiasm for his trade amazed us all as he introduced us to some of the particulars of the base materials, the essential machinery and their setup, and all of the minute details that will get the final product as close to perfection as it’s possible.Upon entering his workshop we were warmly greeted with him, a number of his coworkers as well as well, an armada of CNC machines, lathes and different polishing equipment. We immediately learned that he and his team will create cases in stainless steel, titanium and other materials as well, but since we’re here to gain particular insight into the way in which the bronze instances will be made for Anonimo’s upcoming collections, we focused with this bead of horological materials. To start with, components and cases are milled from molded sticks of bronze. These molds mostly consist of aluminum, nickel, aluminum and tin but the specific composition will always stay a secret. This is of no surprise as that is what grants the substance its desired attributes in terms of hardness, aesthetics and aging.Cases and all associated components experience several phases of cuts that will gradually but surely bring them from a rough piece to the perfect, final shape. They are checked several times between different phases in order to ensure they meet just a few thousandth of a millimeter in tolerance.
The arrival – or occasional rebirth – of a company is always a remarkable phenomenon in the galaxy of watch making. What we have today is the rare chance to have a better look at the earliest stages of a watch brand’s revival as I was one of those invited by Anonimo to see them in the gorgeous Italian city of Florence. We gathered to discover and to discuss their strategies for the long run and also to see where and how they will have their signature brass instances manufactured.Those familiar with the new will know that the production of Anonimo in 1997 already meant another chance, a new start in itself. It happened that year that Officine Panerai (which was also based in Florence at the time) was purchased by the Vendome Group of Richemont SA. The new owners of Panerai relocated its production and design facilities to Switzerland, leaving a number of its engineers, craftsmen and much of its Florentine manufacturing legacy behind. Consequently, Anonimo’s birth meant a fresh beginning partly because some of those craftsmen who had to work for Panerai (but could not or didn’t need to follow along to Switzerland) started working, and partly because with Anonimo there remained a luxury watch brand in Florence.
