Originally started by an American, International Watch Company (IWC) now honors the legacy of its founder Florentine Ariosto Jones. Using the fabled Portugieser as the platform, IWC has chosen to reveal an open view of their manual-wind flying tourbillon movement opposite a printed representation of F.A. Jones’ signature on the silver plated dial. From the back the movement alludes to its brand’s proximity to the German border with its three-quarter top bridge layout. Simply elegant, the stepped bezel and case are a monococque construction and crafted in 18k rose gold with sapphire crystals front and back. Beyond honoring the founder himself, this watch also recalls Daniel H. Craig, whose initials and surname had been a bit of a mystery as they were found engraved on a series of early IWC pocket watches replica without any clear provenance. Recently IWC has asserted that the D.H. Craig engraved on the movement was almost certainly Jones’ maternal uncle – and a likely benefactor in the earliest days of Jones’ IWC. Remembering Uncle Daniel, the formal name of the limited edition of 27 pieces (Jones age when he established IWC) is the Portugieser Tourbillon Hand-Wound Edition “D.H. Craig USA” model and is only available at IWC boutiques in the USA. As part of this limited edition IWC is also partnering with Save America’s Clocks to preserve and/or restore one of New York’s own historic landmarks.
